Thanks for adding me to the list to receive your 'blog.' I'm really enjoying your story! However, I'm very concerned about your doing the remainder of your trip, given the devastation from the hurricane this week. Please let us all know what is possible, and what you decide. (Carmen Ward)

Hi Carmen, thank you for writing and your concern. I decided to sit out the storm last week and am here at home in Durham. The idea of hiking for five days in a rain event that became worse each day and ultimately resulted in Hurricane Helene, was unimaginable. Thank goodness I listened to my gut (as well as my wife!) and hunkered down for the duration. Now I am waiting for the roads to open up, river levels to drop, and, I suspect, the trails to be passable. We'll see how long that takes. Again, Carmen, thank you for writing. I truly am delighted to see your note and can assure you as well as all my friends in Jo's Funshops that I will move forward cautiously when the time comes. In the meanwhile, congratulations on all of your accomplishments. Do take care and stay healthy! Very best regards, Jonathan

Thank goodness, Jonathan, that you had an intuitive sense to not be out hiking. I’m relieved as I’m sure many of your fans are.

The whole thing is slightly crazy! We'll have to see what happens next! Thanks, Consuelo for writing. Maybe it's time to attempt the Arizona Trail--surely, no hurricanes there! Very best regards, Jonathan

Oh dang! I hope you weren't out there during the hurricane! I had to cancel my thru hike of the Bartram Trail because of it. I heard Western NC was really bad!

Hi Erik, thank you for writing. I cancelled my hike due to all the rain which, of course, resulted in Hurricane Helene. I would have been hiking last week Wednesday through Sunday--which would have resulting in being in the "teeth" of the storm--so, thank goodness I listened to my gut and the advice of my family and sat this one out. I agree, Western Carolina, where I was planning to hike, took it on the chin. I haven't heard how things fared with the Bartram Trail--a hike that is likely next on my list if I can ever get the one I am doing! Waiting it out for the roads to open. river levels to drop, the trail to be passable is definitely a pain. Still, it's minor to what others are going through up there. What a crazy time we live in!

Glad you're ok! I would've been going through Franklin right at the time the hurricane passed through. I actually cancelled the trip because I thought my hometown of Athens GA was going to get hit badly and I didn't want to leave my family alone. Worked out ok, because it would've been really dangerous to be out on a trail!

Jonathan,

The logistics of this journey are incredible. I am happy you had a companion that could keep up with you:) I love Grandfather mountain! We experienced that with the family a few years back. It was spectacular! Keep Charging! ❤️ M
